Dear Anu,

I have a 2 year old daughter with very, very coarse hair. It is curled very tightly and close to her scalp. When she was born she had typical soft baby hair, a head full. Then all of a sudden at 10 months old, her hair fell out. When it came back it, it was very, very coarse, dry and had a very tight curl. Do you have any suggestions on a product that could soften it up, make it less dry and more manageable? I need help!

Dear Mom, you did not indicate the reason for your child's hair loss. Was it due to medication? Hair texture does change from the time we were born. Normally the hair becomes thicker in a way matures as we mature. I would say do all you can to keep your daughter's hair moisturized. Also use conditioner after each shampoo, oil her hair and scalp with a natural hair oil (never use products with petroleum or other by products). Have her hair twisted by a natural hair care provider. If her hair is able to rest in braids or twist, it will get a chance to grow and flourish. You may even consider as and added boost to use a leave in conditioner as well as a full bodied balsam conditioner like, "Nature's Gate" conditioner, which can found at most all health food stores. Dear Anu,

My name is Allison Hughes and I am writing to you from Lincoln , New Hampshire . My daughter Ceione is biracial and she has different hair from mine. She has her father's hair. It is funny because the top half is soft and curly and the bottom is really coarse and curly. I think it is falling out and she is going to have all coarse hair. I live in an area that doesn't have any mixed culture so there are not any haircare products up here for her. I wash her hair every other day and I use a shampoo and conditioner. Am I washing it too much? What hair products do you recommend? If I want to leave her hair down, I end up just getting it wet and it sets her curls. I have never dealt with this type of hair. Please help!!

Dear Allison,

Please stop and desist immediately! Shampooing every other day will destroy your daughter's hair. The care of kinky hair is practically the opposite care of straight textured hair. It is best to shampoo her hair as least often as possible; once a week may even be too much considering she's loosing her hair at this time. I would have her hair braided or twisted and shampoo it only once every two weeks. If you begin a consistent regime of conditioning and moisturizing her hair, you should see a significant difference in the health of her hair. I would recommend looking into Jane Carter products. They are being sold at Whole Foods in some areas. Or you can check her website at http://www.janecartersolution.com Also check out styling options for children at http://www.khamitkinks.com Click on styles and then click on "Children's Styles".

Thank you so much,

Allison and Ceione
